Why Hoi An works for families
Hoi An is small and walkable. The old town has no fast traffic in the evening, so kids can wander under the lanterns without you holding your breath. Days are simple here. A morning at the beach, an afternoon nap, a slow dinner by the river. The town rewards a slow pace, which is exactly the pace small children set. Food is gentle too. Rice, noodles, grilled chicken, fresh fruit. Most family-run spots will cook something plain for a fussy eater if you ask. Nobody minds a loud toddler. That alone takes the stress off a meal.
Where to stay: villa over hotel, near the beach
With kids, a private villa beats a hotel room. You get space to spread out, a kitchen for early breakfasts, and a pool the children can use without sharing it with strangers. A villa near Cua Dai Beach also means you are minutes from sand, not stuck in a tourist block.

The point is the setup: fenced pool, quiet lane, real photos, and a host you can reach when something goes wrong at 9pm with a tired child.
What to check before you book any family villa
- Pool safety. Ask if the pool is fenced or gated, and how deep the shallow end is. Photos lie. Ask.
- Real distance to the beach. “Near the beach” can mean a 20-minute walk. Get the number in minutes.
- Host reachability. A good host answers fast. Test it before you pay by sending one question.
- Kitchen and laundry. Early breakfasts and a washer matter more with kids than a fancy lobby ever will.
Best things to do in Hoi An with kids
Basket boat ride in the coconut village
In Cam Thanh, fishermen spin round bamboo boats through the water palms. Kids love the spinning. It is short, cheap, and shaded. Go in the morning before the tour buses, and skip the loud party boats if your children are small.
Cua Dai and An Bang Beach
Cua Dai is calm and wide, good for little ones. An Bang, a short ride north, has more cafes and a livelier feel for older kids. Mornings are best. The midday sun here is strong, so bring hats and come back to the pool by noon.
Lantern town after dark
At night the Ancient Town glows. Buy a paper lantern, let your child float it on the river, and walk slowly. This is the memory most families carry home. It costs almost nothing.
Getting there and getting around

Once you are here, you barely need transport. Rent bicycles, walk to the beach, and take a short taxi only for the old town at night. Less moving around means happier kids.
Honest tips parents will thank me for
- Plan one thing per day, not three. The heat sets the limit, not your list.
- Carry water and a hat everywhere. The afternoon sun is the real challenge here.
- Pharmacies are good and cheap. Do not pack a suitcase of medicine.
- Build the day around the pool and a nap. The town is still there in the evening.
