Almost every family planning Central Vietnam asks me the same thing: Hoi An or Da Nang? I host villas in both, so I have no reason to push one over the other. The honest answer is that they are 40 minutes apart and very different in feel, and the right base depends on what your kids, and your grandparents, actually want from the days.
The quick answer for most families
If you want calm, culture, and a slower pace with the beach nearby, base in Hoi An. If you want a big, easy beach and a real city behind you, base in Da Nang. Both sit on the same coast and share one airport, so you are never far from the other. Most families I host pick Hoi An for the all-round trip and day-trip into Da Nang, but plenty do it the other way.
The beaches, for kids
Da Nang has the bigger, wider beaches. My Khe and Non Nuoc run for miles, with space for kids to run and gentle mornings before the wind picks up. Hoi An’s beaches, Cua Dai and An Bang, are smaller and feel more local. I will be honest: Cua Dai has had real erosion over the years, so some stretches are narrower than the photos you see online. Both cities have calm water at the edge in the morning, which is what you want with small children, but no sea is a swimming pool, so you still watch them.
Things to do with kids
This is where the two cities split. Hoi An is the cultural one: a lantern-lit old town in the evening, basket boat rides in the coconut palms, a tailor who will make your kid a tiny ao dai, riverside markets. It is walkable and quietly magic for children at night. Da Nang is the activity one: the Marble Mountains with their caves and steps, Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge for a big day out, and a long beach for the rest. Getting around and arriving
Both cities use Da Nang International Airport, so your flight is the same either way. From the airport, Da Nang’s beach is 10 to 15 minutes, and Hoi An is about 40 minutes. If you are travelling with tired toddlers, that extra half hour to Hoi An is worth knowing about, though it is an easy, flat road. Once you are based, both are simple to get around by taxi or a booked car, and a day trip between the two is easy.

In Hoi An I host The Manor, a four-bedroom villa that sleeps up to ten adults and five children, two minutes from Cua Dai Beach, and the Hola villas, brand-new three-bedroom houses sleeping six adults and three children, three minutes from the beach. My honest verdict for families
If I had to choose for a first family trip, I would base in Hoi An. The old town at night is the thing kids remember, the pace is gentle, and you still have a beach and a pool. Then I would spend a day or two in Da Nang for the Marble Mountains and the wider beach.
But if your family is mostly about the beach and a city with more restaurants and nightlife within reach, flip it: base in Da Nang and day-trip to Hoi An for the lanterns.
