Hoi An is the lantern-lit old town with a slow, charming pace. Da Nang is the bigger beach city with more to do. The short answer
For a first trip, charm, and families, stay in Hoi An. For a big beach, city energy, and easy airport access, stay in Da Nang. If you have more than four or five nights, split your stay and get the best of each. They are too close to make this a hard choice.
Hoi An: what it is like
Hoi An is the postcard. A walkable old town of yellow walls, lanterns, tailors, and food on every corner, with calm beaches like Cua Dai a short ride away. It is slower and prettier than Da Nang, and it is where I send couples, families, and anyone who wants to relax rather than rush. The trade-off: it is small, so there is less to “do,” and the central streets get crowded at night.
Da Nang: what it is like
Da Nang is a real city: a long modern beachfront at My Khe, big bridges, the Marble Mountains, Ba Na Hills, and more restaurants and nightlife. The airport is right there, which makes it easy to land and settle. It is livelier and more spread out than Hoi An, with less old-world charm but more options. Good for travelers who want the beach plus a city buzz.
Which one suits you
