A Hue day trip is the classic add-on for anyone basing themselves in Da Nang or Hoi An. Hue was Vietnam’s imperial capital, and it sits about two hours north over the Hai Van Pass. You can see the highlights in a long day, but I will be honest: you cannot see everything, and the drive is half the experience. Here is how to plan a day in Hue that feels full, not rushed.
How far is Hue, and the Hai Van Pass
Hue is around 100km north of Da Nang, roughly two to two and a half hours by car. The scenic way goes over the Hai Van Pass, a winding coastal road with big views that the car shows on TV made famous. The faster way is the tunnel underneath. I tell guests to take the pass on the way up while everyone is fresh, and the tunnel back when they are tired. Build the pass into your timing; it adds maybe 40 minutes but it is worth it.
What to see in one day
The trick is to pick, not cram. In a single day, most people do the Imperial City plus one or two royal tombs, with a quick stop at a pagoda. That is a full, satisfying day. Try to do all the tombs and the market and a boat ride and you spend the whole time in the car.
The Imperial City is the heart of it: a walled citadel with palaces, gates, and the ruins of the Forbidden Purple City inside. Give it a couple of hours. It is hot and shadeless in summer, so go in the morning.
The royal tombs
Hue’s emperors built elaborate tombs in the hills outside town, and they are the other reason to come. If you only pick one, make it Khai Dinh, a dark, ornate, almost gothic tomb covered in glass and ceramic mosaic. Tu Duc is greener and more peaceful, set among pines and a lake. Minh Mang is grand and symmetrical. Two is plenty for a day.
Eat Hue food
Hue takes its food seriously, partly because it once cooked for emperors. Have a bowl of bun bo Hue, the spicy beef noodle soup the city is named for, and try the little rice cakes like banh beo and banh nam. A boat trip on the Perfume River is pretty if you have time, but the food is the part I would not skip.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip works and most guests are happy with it. But if you love history, one night in Hue lets you slow down, see more tombs, and walk the citadel without watching the clock. There is no wrong answer. If your group has young kids, the long drive each way can be a lot, so weigh that.
How to do it
A private car with a driver is the easiest way; you set the pace and stop where you want. Group tours are cheaper but keep a fixed schedule. Either way, leave early, around 7 or 8am, to make the most of the day and beat the midday heat at the citadel.
